How to Tell If You Have Mold (and What to Do About It)

Mold hides. Here's how to read the warning signs, when to test, and why DIY removal often makes the problem worse.

Trust your nose

A persistent musty, earthy smell — especially in a basement, bathroom, or a room that's had water damage — is one of the most reliable early signs of hidden mold, even when you can't see anything.

Look where water has been

Mold follows moisture. Check around past leaks, under sinks, behind toilets, along baseboards, and anywhere that's flooded. Discoloration or staining on walls and ceilings is worth investigating.

Know when to test

If you smell it but can't find it, or you've had water damage and want to be sure, air and surface testing gives a definitive answer and locates the source. Testing before remediation also tells us exactly what we're dealing with.

Why DIY can backfire

Scrubbing visible mold without containment can release spores throughout the home and make the problem worse. Proper remediation uses containment and negative air so spores can't spread to clean areas.

The right sequence

Test, contain, remove safely, then verify with post-remediation testing before rebuilding. If you suspect mold, call Allied at 415-413-0066 and we'll walk you through the right next step.
