What to Do in the First Hour After Water Damage

The first 60 minutes after discovering water damage shape how much it costs and how much gets saved. Here's a calm, practical checklist.

Stay safe first

If water is near electrical outlets, the panel, or standing deep, don't wade in. Shut off power to the affected area at the breaker only if you can reach it safely and dry. When in doubt, stay out and call a professional.

Stop the source

If the water is coming from plumbing, shut off the supply — the fixture valve, or the main shutoff for the house. Stopping the flow is the single most effective thing you can do before help arrives.

Document everything

Before you move or clean anything, take photos and video of the water and the damage. This record matters for your insurance claim. Then note when you discovered it and what you think caused it.

Move what you can

Lift valuables, electronics, and furniture out of the water if it's safe. Get wet items off wood floors and carpet. Put foil or blocks under furniture legs still sitting in moisture.

Call for professional help

Water spreads into subfloor, drywall, and framing fast, and mold can start within 24–48 hours. Professional extraction and drying is what prevents a small loss from becoming a big one. Allied's line is answered 24/7 at 415-413-0066.
